Do Tacos Have Cheese?

Tacos are simple, tasty, and can be customized in countless ways to suit any palate. However, one question that has divided taco lovers everywhere is whether or not tacos should have cheese. Some argue that cheese is an essential ingredient, while others believe it takes away from the true essence of a taco. In today’s post, we provide an answer.

Do Tacos Have Cheese?

What makes a taco a taco? To answer this question, we first need to understand the basic components of a taco. The traditional taco consists of a tortilla, protein (usually beef, chicken, or pork), and toppings such as salsa, guacamole, and cilantro.

However, cheese is not a traditional ingredient in the original Mexican-style taco. It was only when tacos made their way to America that cheese became a common addition. So, technically speaking, Mexican tacos do not have cheese.

That being said, while their origins are undeniably Mexican, tacos have become a global food. Many people enjoy adding cheese to their tacos as a way to enhance the flavor and texture. Cheese can add a creamy, gooey element to the taco that complements the other ingredients.

Versatility Is Key

One of the arguments against putting cheese in tacos is that it takes away from the true essence of what a taco is supposed to be. Tacos are meant to be simple and straightforward, with the flavors of the ingredients shining through. Cheese can sometimes overpower other flavors.

However, versatility is at the heart of what a taco is. Ask any Mexican what a taco is and chances are good that the response will be something along the lines of “Any food you put in a tortilla.” That’s why you have cajeta tacos (a milk-based caramel sauce) or even salt tacos.

Ultimately, the decision to include cheese in tacos is a matter of personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer, as it largely comes down to individual taste. Whether you prefer a traditional taco without cheese or one loaded with queso, both are valid and delicious options.
