No matter what country you visit, you will find a Mexican restaurant. Mexican food seems to have an almost universal appeal. But why is Mexican food so good and well-loved around the world?
Why Is Mexican Food So Good?
Mexican food is increasingly being recognized as one of the world’s most delicious culinary traditions. For example, did you know that Mexican Food has been declared Cultural Heritage of the World by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization)?
But why is Mexican food so good? We can think of four reasons.
1. A Unique Combination of Flavors
Mexico has a unique history, and every aspect of the country reflects that, including its food. The arrival of the Spanish in the early 1500s marked the encounter of two radically different cultures that were destined to clash. And while the conquista was anything but peaceful, it ultimately resulted in memorable traditions, iconic art, and delicious dishes that combine some of the best Spanish (and European) cuisine had to offer with the ancient cooking methods and ingredients used by the ancient peoples of Mexico.
2. An Unmistakable Identity
Neither the Spanish conquistadores nor the ancient Mexicans knew or cared about marketing. However, they ended up creating one of the world’s most recognizable culinary traditions. When something (be it a toothpaste, a dish, a rock band or anything in between). has a clear identity, it’s easier to remember and replicate. With its unmistakable character and memorable ingredients such as chili peppers and tortillas, Mexican food was ready for global stardom right out of the gate.
3. Great for Life On-The-Go
In a way, traditional Mexican food was way ahead of its time. You could make the case that some Mexican dishes were fast food before fast food was even a concept. For example, historians believe that tacos were originally food for workers. (After all, the first meaning of the word “taco” was a paper tube filled with gunpowder used in Mexico’s silver mines.) Similarly, many typical Mexican dishes were created to be consumed on the go, making them an ideal option for our fast-paced world.
Mexican food reflects a fundamental trait of the Mexican character: adaptability. Do you want to enjoy tacos but don’t have corn? No problem: use wheat flour to make your tortillas? But what if you crave tacos but don’t have meat or frijoles? Put cheese on that tortilla, or anything else that tickles your fancy (even spaghetti!) and you have a taco. While traditional, authentic Mexican food is delicious and unmistakable, few things are set in stone, and Mexican dishes are always evolving.
