What Is a Wet Burrito?

Picture of burrito covered in sauce illustrates blog: What is a wet burrito?

Burritos have become popular all over the world thanks to their irresistible deliciousness. But what is a wet burrito? Let’s take a closer look at this tempting version of a Mexican-American classic.

What Is a Wet Burrito?

As you might remember a burrito is a sort of big taco made with a flour tortilla filled with ingredients that may include chicken (or other types of meat), veggies, sauces, beans, and whatever tickles your imagination.

A wet burrito is a burrito bathed in a savory sauce. This small addition produces a big change: unlike normal burritos, wet burritos cannot be eaten with just one hand, but the sauce makes them a richer, more interesting dish in terms of flavor.

Why Wet Burritos?

As is often the case with delicious food, the answer to “Why wet burritos?” is “Why not?!”

In a previous post, we saw how salsas are integral to Mexican cuisine, so much so that an unwritten rule of Mexican food is that anything can be made more delicious by bathing it in salsa, including burritos.

While red salsa can be considered the unofficial standard, the possibilities are endless. For example, no one would bat an eye at a wet burrito made with green salsa. Feel free to experiment!

At El Pollo Norteno our wet burritos are covered in red Ranchero sauce, topped with melted cheese to add an extra layer of flavor, and served with salad and chips. You have to try them!
